Late at night on January 19, 1990, 26.000 Soviet troops stormed Baku. They acted pursuant to a state of emergency declared by the USSR Supreme Soviet Presidium, signed by President Gorbachev and disclosed to the Azerbaijani public only after many citizens lay wounded or dead in the streets, hospitals and morgues of Baku.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, Armenia retained strong ties with Russia, while at the same time attempting to find areas of political, economic and social cooperation with the European Union. The relations between the EU and Armenia are governed through the framework of the EU-Armenia Partnership and Cooperation Agreement signed in 1996 and implemented in 1999.

On 16 November 2011 in the Polish Embassy of Tbilisi hosted a meeting with a representative of the Institute for East European Studies, with the Professor Jan Malicki The goal of this meeting was a scholars program review and discussing of the future prospects.

W 1942 roku w Auschwitz został zabity przez hitlerowców.

Georgia remains committed to joining the European Union, said President Mikheil Saakashvili in an exclusive interview with EurActiv Poland. In a conciliatory gesture towards Moscow, the Georgian leader argued that closer ties between his country and the EU could also pave the way for more integration between Russia and the 27-nation bloc.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has welcomed the agreement on Russia’s WTO accession signed between Moscow and Tbilisi.

“I want to congratulate Georgia on the decision adopted with regard to Russia’s affiliation with the World Trade Organization. This is an important agreement, because it will increase free trade,” Anders Fogh Rasmussen said at a news conference at the Radisson hotel.

26 października w Bibliotece Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego w ramach międzynarodowej konferencji poświęconej Prometeizmowi, odbyła się prezentacja pierwszego numeru czasopisma „Nowy Prometeusz”. Główne przesłanie pisma przedstawiły członkinie redakcji: dr Hijran Alijeva-Sztrauch (Redaktor naczelna) i Aleksandra Gryźlak. O zawartości wydania opowiedzieli członkowie Komitetu Redakcyjnego: prof. Georgij Mamulia (Paryż, Francja), dr Zaur Gasimov (Mainz, Niemcy) i dr David Kolbaja (Warszawa, Polska). Należy zauważyć, że do Komitetu Redakcyjnego także należą prof. Jan Malicki (przewodniczący Komitetu, Warszawa, Polska), prof. Nasiman Yagublu (Baku, Azerbejdżan), dr Kurtmolla Abdulganiyev (Symferopol, Ukraina) i dr Andrij Portnow (Kijów, Ukraina). W składzie Redakcji jest również Tadeusz Iwański. Tekst w języku rosyjskim.

The Fourth issue of IISS Caucasus Security Insight is dedicated to relations between the North and South Caucasus. Even though the region is dissected by a mountain range and state borders, it has common history, and close cultural, ethnic and economic ties.

For this issue of CSI we asked experts from Russia, Georgia, Europe and the US, as well as from the North Caucasus and Abkhazia, to provide their perspective on the impact of the August 2008 war and Russia’s recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on the North Caucasus region.
